Description
Our journey begins in the vibrant city of Tangier, a fascinating blend of cultures and the perfect destination to capture the essence of Moroccan urban life. From there, we will head to Chefchaouen, the enchanting “Blue City,” where its painted alleys and magical atmosphere will provide the backdrop for our first photography sessions. Next, we will travel to Fez, with its maze of narrow streets and the historic tanneries, ideal for photographing unique colors and textures.
We will then venture into the desert towards Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara, where we will spend a magical night in “Jaimas” (traditional Arab tents) and enjoy a camel ride at sunset. While in the desert, we’ll take time to capture the dunes under the starry skies, making the most of the shadows and colors of the sunset.
Our journey continues to Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” where we will explore the famous film studios and the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a perfect backdrop for epic films and a unique opportunity to photograph landscapes that seem out of this world. Finally, we will cross the majestic Atlas Mountains to reach Marrakech, with its bustling Jemaa el-Fnaa square and rich culture offering endless photographic opportunities.

This photo tour through Morocco will place a special emphasis on night photography. We have carefully chosen our dates and itinerary to coincide with the best nights for capturing the Milky Way. You will learn how to plan, execute, and process breathtaking astrophotography, guided by two specialists in the field.

Itinerary
Welcome to the beginning of our photographic adventure in Morocco! Throughout the day, we will welcome all participants at Tangier Airport, where our team will be waiting to greet you.
Once the group is complete, we will transfer to Chefchaouen, the legendary Blue City nestled in the Rif Mountains. During the journey, we will begin to immerse ourselves in the essence of the country.
This is where the Morocco Photo Tour officially begins.
In the morning, we will explore Chefchaouen, known as “The Blue City.” This picturesque town offers a full day to wander through its cobbled streets, colorful doors, and iconic blue facades.
Chefchaouen is a true paradise for photographers: its soft light, deep shadows, and natural compositions ensure that every corner tells a story through the lens.
In the afternoon, we will begin our journey toward Fez, stopping along the way at Volubilis, the extraordinary Roman ruins where we can photograph beautifully preserved columns, arches, and mosaics.
After breakfast, we will visit Fez, one of the oldest and most enigmatic cities in Morocco. We will explore its medina, a fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets, traditional workshops, and historic monuments.
We will stop at the famous Fez tanneries, an iconic location where leather is still processed using traditional methods, offering a striking display of colors, textures, and everyday life—ideal for photography.
We will then continue through the cedar forest of the Middle Atlas, home to the Barbary macaques, where we can capture natural scenes in a setting completely different from the urban environment.
In the afternoon, we will begin our transfer toward Merzouga, gradually entering the landscapes of the desert.
After breakfast, we will depart for Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert, crossing the ever-changing landscapes of the Atlas Mountains.
We will arrive at sunset at our accommodation, an exclusive desert palace. In the afternoon, we will enjoy a photographic walk among the dunes during sunset—a magical moment to capture the long shadows and golden tones of the Sahara.
After nightfall, we will walk under the stars to continue photographing the nearby dunes.
The day begins with a traditional breakfast at Nomad Palace. We will then head to Khamlia, a small village with roots in Mali, where we will enjoy vibrant Gnawa music.
We will visit the Mifis mines and share tea in traditional nomadic tents, experiencing desert culture up close.
In the afternoon, we will take a 4×4 excursion around the Merzouga area.
After breakfast at Nomad Palace, we will visit the traditional market of Rissani in the morning—a place full of local life and authentic scenes, perfect for documentary photography.
In the afternoon, free time to relax or take part in optional activities.
In the morning, we will stroll through Merzouga and visit the car museum, a surprising collection in the heart of the desert.
At midday, we will enjoy an exquisite couscous in a local home, sharing an authentic culinary experience.
In the afternoon, we will take a camel ride to our desert camp, located in the heart of the dunes.
The day will conclude with a night photography session under the star-filled Sahara sky.
We will head toward Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” a region filled with cinematic landscapes.
We will pass through the Todra Gorge and the Valley of Roses before arriving in Ouarzazate, home to the famous Atlas Film Studios.
We will begin the day by visiting the film studios of Ouarzazate, where legendary productions such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones were filmed.
Later, we will head to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a spectacular adobe fortress, perfect for photography.
We will then cross the impressive Atlas Mountains, reaching an altitude of 2,260 meters, with breathtaking panoramic views separating the Atlantic from the Mediterranean.
Arrival in Marrakech at the end of the day.
Day dedicated to exploring Marrakech, famous for its vibrant souks, hidden gardens, and the iconic Jemaa el-Fnaa Square.
Free afternoon to continue exploring the city, relax, or go shopping.
It’s time to say goodbye. The day is dedicated to airport transfers, leaving you with unforgettable memories and spectacular photographs from a unique journey through Morocco.

About the trip
Morocco offers extraordinary opportunities for landscape, architecture, street, wildlife and night photography. We recommend bringing:
• A DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls.
• A sturdy tripod with a ball head.
• A fast wide-angle lens, such as a 14–24 mm, for landscapes, architecture and Milky Way photography.
• A standard zoom lens, such as a 24–70 mm, for street photography, portraits and everyday scenes.
• A telephoto lens, such as a 70–200 mm. A 100–400 mm or 200–600 mm lens is optional for wildlife and distant landscape details.
• A remote shutter release or intervalometer for long exposures and night photography.
• A polarizing filter and an optional 6-stop ND filter for landscape photography.
• A camera backpack, protective cover and suitable equipment for keeping dust and sand away from your camera.
• A headlamp, preferably with a red-light mode, for night sessions.
• Spare batteries, chargers, memory cards and a card reader.
• A lens-cleaning kit and air blower, especially useful in desert environments.
• A laptop with Adobe Photoshop and Camera Raw installed for image-review and editing sessions.
IMPORTANT: Please do not bring a drone unless IceMonkey Tours has confirmed in writing that the necessary Moroccan authorizations have been obtained.
Our photography tour takes place in April, when conditions can vary considerably between northern Morocco, the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert. We recommend dressing in comfortable layers.
• FOOTWEAR: Comfortable walking shoes or lightweight hiking shoes with good grip. Closed footwear is recommended for medinas, photographic excursions and desert activities.
• UPPER BODY: Lightweight, breathable T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts for protection from the sun and dust.
• WARM LAYERS: A fleece, sweater or lightweight insulated jacket for early mornings, evenings, mountain areas and night photography in the desert.
• OUTER LAYER: A lightweight windproof and waterproof jacket, as occasional rain is possible in northern Morocco during April.
• LOWER BODY: Comfortable lightweight trousers suitable for walking and travelling. Modest clothing is recommended when visiting traditional areas and cultural sites.
• ACCESSORIES: Sun hat or cap, sunglasses, sunscreen and a lightweight scarf or neck gaiter for protection from the sun, wind and desert dust.
Temperatures may feel warm during the day but considerably cooler after sunset, particularly in the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara. Always carry an additional layer during evening and night sessions.
The official currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). Credit cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants and larger businesses, but cash is useful in medinas, traditional markets, small cafés and rural areas.
- Wi-Fi will be available at most hotels, although the connection may be slower or unavailable in remote areas of the Sahara. Participants may purchase a local SIM card or arrange an eSIM before travelling.
- Morocco uses type C and E electrical sockets with a standard voltage of 220 V and a frequency of 50 Hz. Travellers from countries using different plugs should bring an appropriate adapter.
- Stay well hydrated throughout the journey. We recommend using sealed bottled or properly filtered water and carrying a reusable bottle during excursions.
- Always ask permission before photographing local people, particularly children. Photography near military, police or other sensitive government facilities must be avoided.
- Bring a small daypack for water, sunscreen, additional clothing and the photographic equipment required for each session. You will not need to carry all your equipment at every location.
- Dust and sand are common in desert environments. Avoid changing lenses unnecessarily and clean your equipment carefully after each session.

Participants must book their arrival flight to Tangier Ibn Battuta Airport (TNG) and their departure flight from Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK).
Please send your complete flight information to IceMonkey Tours before departure so that airport transfers can be arranged correctly.
DOCUMENTATION
Entry requirements for Morocco vary according to nationality and may change before the departure date. Every participant is responsible for travelling with a valid passport and for checking whether a visa or any additional documentation is required.
We recommend checking the official requirements applicable to your nationality well in advance of the tour.
MEALS
All breakfasts, lunches and dinners specified in the itinerary are included in the tour price.
Drinks, alcoholic beverages and any food or services ordered separately are not included unless expressly indicated.
On photography-intensive days, meals may be adapted to the schedule or provided as picnics so that we can make the best use of the available light.
Participants must notify IceMonkey Tours in advance of any allergies, intolerances or dietary requirements.
DRONES
The importation and operation of drones in Morocco require prior official authorization. Participants should not travel with a drone unless IceMonkey Tours has confirmed in writing that all necessary permits have been obtained.
Unauthorized drones may be retained by Moroccan customs authorities.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. The policy must cover medical assistance, accidents, repatriation, cancellation, baggage and photographic equipment.
ITINERARY CONDITIONS
The itinerary may be modified because of weather, road conditions, local restrictions or other circumstances beyond the organization’s control.
The guides will always adapt the schedule to the available light and the best possible photographic conditions.
Acommodation
During our photographic adventure through Iceland with Ice Monkey Tours, we will stay in a variety of charming hotels, carefully selected for both their proximity to the photographic destinations on our route and their comfort. To keep pace with our ever-changing photographic itinerary, we will move to different hotels throughout the journey, ensuring we are as close as possible to each day’s points of interest. You will enjoy comfortable double rooms with private bathrooms to fully enjoy your photographic adventure.

The photography workshop will be led by José D. Riquelme, an award-winning professional photographer specializing in landscape and night photography.
Our local team in Morocco will also provide logistical and cultural assistance throughout the journey.
The workshop is designed for photographers of all skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced professionals.
Photographic guidance will be adapted to each participant’s experience, interests and equipment. Non-photographers are also welcome to join and enjoy the journey through Morocco.

Yes. Our instructors can provide general advice about suitable drone models, photographic features and camera settings.
However, purchasing a drone does not guarantee that it can be brought into or operated in Morocco. Official authorization is still required.
Yes. We recommend bringing a laptop to download and back up your photographs and to participate in the image-selection and editing sessions.
Adobe Photoshop and Camera Raw should be installed and updated before the beginning of the workshop.

Deposit Policy: A reservation is confirmed upon a deposit of US$ 1,000. No spots will be reserved without the deposit.
Final Payment: The final amount must be paid 30 days before the trip begins.
We understand that attending our workshops requires prior commitment, and also that life events can occur that force you to cancel a trip. Depending on the cancellation date, the following conditions will apply:
- More than 90 days before the start date of the workshop: Full refund of payments made.
- Between 90 and 60 days before the start of the workshop: 50% of the booking will be refunded.
- 60-30 days before the start of the workshop: 35% of the booking will be refunded.
- Within 30 days prior to the start of the workshop: No refund will be made.
Accidents:
- IceMonkey is not responsible for accidents to workshop participants and will not cover medical expenses if necessary. During the workshop, each participant is responsible for their own safety and physical integrity.
- IceMonkey is not responsible for accidents or loss of photographic equipment during the workshop. Each participant is responsible for their own photographic equipment.
Travel insurance is mandatory.
Punctuality:
- Each day of the expedition, all participants must be punctual at the established time. All participants must be at the starting point of the expedition for its beginning. In case of delays due to inconveniences, the participant must communicate with someone from the IceMonkey staff as soon as possible.
- Respect:
Participants may be at different levels of knowledge about the subject, which requires patience when explaining topics that are already familiar to them. The photographic area of each participant must be respected. Disrespect towards a participant or staff member will not be tolerated.

Climate:
- The tour and its itinerary depend on the weather and can change at any moment. We will always be attentive to the best weather conditions to determine where to go and optimize the taking of photographs.
